Memorials

Remembrance is not about dwelling in the past but moving forward

Following a funeral of a loved one it may be appropriate to have a memorial service. The time frame is up to you, it could be immediately after the funeral or at a specific time or on a special date significant to the family, friends or an organisation. The memorial service gives people a chance to pay their respects to the person who has died or remember the impact this person’s life has had on people and it is important to honour their achievements.

Memorials can be more uplifting and light hearted than a funeral as there has been time for the initial intensity of grief to pass. It’s an ideal way to remember your loved one, together as a family and a community. There are many unsung heroes within a community who contribute and care for the people within it, providing support, a listening ear, running errands and pulling like-minded people together in times of difficulty and need. Sometimes these community heroes are only recognized to the wider neighbourhood, when they die. Their achievements and impact need to be celebrated and never forgotten so that their legacy lives on for all those who wish to carry on with tradition.

There’s lots of room for creativity within a memorial ceremony, for example, creating memory bears from that person’s clothing, planting wildflowers, sharing old photographs, or putting emphasis on that person’s interests (music, sports, cars, etc.) or going to their special places, would all create a beautiful day.
